Banjo Mayhem Descends Upon the Machine Project @ LACMA

The 5 South closure due to the fire in Sylmar made it impossible for Kate’s vocal cohorts to make it down to LACMA in time on Saturday, November 15. So, with 2/3 of her trio MIA, she resorted to her old stand-by accompanist, yours truly.

LACMA is beautiful and it was really exciting to hear Kate sing a Bulgarian vocal solo into the giant and reverberant space. The clarion beckoning of a horn ensemble also sounded gorgeous. We played about an hour long set of Balkan tunes both in an elevator and in the elevator lobby to an incidental audience of museum goers. I quite enjoyed the unabashed reactions of small children as they entered the elevator, ranging from a visibly piqued curiosity and joy, a knee jerk covering of the ears, to the flat out bawling of an infant!

I fear there will be video forthcoming (ha!) and there are these pics on Flickr already (front and back views!) -

The Sparrow Quartet @ Nettwerk

sparrow quartet

My friends in the Sparrow Quartet swooped in to LA to perform a quick showcase at the Nettwerk facilities in Hollywood. I’m proud to say that this exceptional group of artists has improved and evolved since I last saw them. The musicianship is outstanding, but beyond that their emotive arrangements have grown to exploit all the dynamics capable of this combination of instruments. And, yeah, I’m totally biased because they are individually and collectively some of the greatest people I’ve had the pleasure to meet - smart, compassionate, and fun.

Here are some (terrible) iPhone pics on Flickr.
